New Class! | Aerial Silks (Lvl 0) with Karla

Aerial Silks (level 0) with Karla starts Monday, May 6 at Kaizen! Class on Mondays 730-830pm.

What is aerial silks?

Aerial silks, also known as aerial fabric or aerial tissue, is a type of performance art and physical practice in which artists perform movements while hanging from a fabric suspended from the ceiling. This fabric, made from a special stretchy and strong polyester or nylon material, supports the performer as they climb, wrap, fall, swing, and spiral their bodies into and out of various positions.

The practice of aerial silks combines elements of dance, gymnastics, and circus arts, emphasizing grace, strength, flexibility, and creativity. Performers use the fabric to create dramatic drops, elegant poses, and fluid sequences that appear to defy gravity. It's not only visually stunning but also a rigorous workout that enhances strength, flexibility, balance, and overall physical conditioning.

Aerial silks provide a unique, enjoyable way to exercise and express oneself artistically, appealing to those looking for an alternative to more traditional forms of fitness.

CONTRAINDICATIONS: Vertigo. Pregnancy. Severe back or neck pain. Glaucoma. Heart condition. Disc herniation. Recent Back or Shoulder Surgery. Recent Eye Surgery

What Can I Expect in this aerial silks class?

This aerial silks classes will start at level 0 with fundamental skills and safety techniques, gradually progressing to more complex moves as students build their strength and confidence. The practice is suitable for pure beginners, working both on and off the silk giving students an opportunity to keep developing pertinent skills while developing grip strength over time. Karla will start with poses in knotted silks (similar to using a flying yoga hammock) and build towards climbing, and both single and double footlocks.

New Class! | 5K Starter Steps w/ Tegan

5K Starter Steps (level 0) with Tegan starts Friday, May 17 at Kaizen! Class on Fridays 615-745pm.

I want to run but. . .

1.I’m overweight and heard running can be dangerous for my joints.

“Too fat to run” is a myth! Your bones and joints are built to carry you; what matters is your form- not your fat %.

  • If your knees are collapsing in (at any weight) you’ll damage the knees.

  • This 5K Starter Steps program trains proper biomechanics to move safely.

2. I have social anxiety about people seeing me struggle.

This is not a boot camp. And struggle is not failure. This is a program created to support you where you are bringing movement into your life.

  • We recognize this fear of getting started and are building a community rooted in the same intention- to be supported where you are while working towards where you want to be!

This is not a boot camp. And struggle is not failure. This is a program created to support you where you are bringing movement into your life.

3. I’ve never run before and don’t know where to start.

Here! This is a program created for those starting with little current movement and zero running experience.

  • With a combined 40+ years movement experience, Tegan and Mindy are here to make the process accessible, understandable and progressive. We are ready to meet you where you are!

4. I have injuries/pain I’m scared to make worse.

Pre/rehab is 50% of the program. Informed by Mindy’s experience with clients healing back pain, foot pain, knee pain, and her personal experience rehabbing her ACL after reconstruction.

  • The goal of the program isn’t finishing a 5k- it’s to set yourself to move well from walking to 5k and beyond!

5. I’m out of shape and don’t want to slow down the group.

There’s no first/last in a circle! Coach Tegan specifically chose track training over road running to take this worry off of the table. GO AT YOUR OWN PACE!

Program Plan

  • 6:15pm: Students will meet at Kaizen for movement, proprioception and pre/rehab work with Mindy.

  • 6:45: walk to PKNU track with Tegan

  • 7:00: interval 5k prep training

  • 7:20: walk back to Kaizen

Meet Your Coach, Tegan!

  • 20 years as a marathon runner with highlights including: qualifying and running Boston Marathon and Personal Records of a 3:22 Full Course Marathon (42.195) and 1:31 Half Course record (21.1km)

  • Triathlete and IRONMAN Triathlete since 2017 with accomplishments of 7 completed King Courses (3.8km Swim, 180km Cycle, 42.195km Run)

  • ULTRA MARATHON Runner with accomplishments as a winner in both 50km and 100km distances and trail running competitions

  • Tegan's philosophy on running is to have fun and enjoy the process! Running can take you to new places literally, physically and emotionally.

Meet Your coach, Mindy!

  • specializing in yoga for pain: low back, knees hip

  • responsible for own physical therapy after ACL reconstruction

  • late in life movement hobbyist- running, dancing , surfing

What is Yoga Nidra?

Come experience first-hand the space where tranquility meets the cutting edge of neuroscience, Sunday, March 31st. Join your guide, Cindi, for a session of “yoga nidra“ (translated as “yogic sleep'“). Our session is a gentle invitation to explore this ancient brain hack and the profound restorative powers it holds.

We are at the dawn of understanding ancient practices through the lens of modern science. Andrew Huberman, renowned Stanford neuroscientist, has popularized this ancestral wisdom under the more familiar name: “non-sleep deep rest (NSDR)”, a state of profound mental and physical rejuvenation that taps into the deepest layers of our neurological well-being. a practice so profound it has piqued the interest of vast neurological research.

What Can I Expect at this Yoga Nidra Session?

Cindi will guide you through a carefully curated sequence designed to ease the body into a state of deep relaxation, targeting areas that store stress—the pelvis, spine, and jaw.

As we move into our yoga nidra practice, we venture beyond the surface of relaxation into the essence of deep rest. Lying on your back in a comfortable position, Cindi will give verbal guidance through this trip.

Yoga Master Class Series | #5 Inversions

102A5092.JPG

5. INVERSIONS | 4.20.24

Getting upside is so important for helping out your circulation, supporting the immune system and not to mention is helps build our bravery! More than drilling to stand on your hands, we will explore a plethora of ways to get upside down to reap the benefits of inversions at every level of practice. (Please notify Mindy of neck, shoulder and wrist injuries.)

Part 3/5. In this series, the vast gamut of yoga poses is organized into 5 different movement patterns. (Description of each master class given below.)

Master Classes are 5 Saturdays in a row 3.23-4.20.24 at our DONGNAE location. Students may book classes individually. Discounted tuition available for enrolling in the full 5 part series.

What to expect in these Master Classes?

Students will gain a deeper understanding of how pain issues start and how to interpret signals from the body. This information will be conveyed verbally and somatically . This means we will use both verbal explanation and movement drills to help students understand the objective of each class. They will also go through unique, detailed sequences including both familiar traditional poses and non-traditional movement/training drills from the physical therapy world and other movement modalities.

This series is for students looking feeling “stuck”- you are afraid to attempt or just plain unable to approach certain poses because of pain, or you are not progressing with certain postures and you just don’t know why. This is very beneficial for teachers wanting to understand how to break down asana and sequences into their parts. (See below for individual workshop specifics.)

What is a Master Class?

Master Classes differ from standard group classes in that there is more time dedicated to lecture (about 70% practice/30% lecture) and “breakout sessions”- working in teams to focus on specific drills or work through different movement patterns to better understand the hows and whys behind the poses, not merely the poses themselves.

Introducing master class teacher, Mindy.

Mindy is an E-Ryt 500 (experienced registered yoga teacher) who specializes in making yoga adaptable and accessible. She is focused on extracting yoga’s maximum therapeutic benefits through functional prop use, smart sequencing and teaching based on feedback and consent. She has fixed multiple pain points for herself and clients including chronic low back pain, shoulder impingements, hip dysfunction and solely rehabbed her knee with the (very modified) Ashtanga Primary Standing Sequence after ACL surgery.

Hips don't lie. To lie would require being quiet, subtle, easily ignored. Anyone with hip pain knows hips don't lie- they scream, they pop, burn, they lock, they throw a full tantrum in the middle of a grocery store with no apparent rhyme or reason. So- let's work on that!

Yoga for Pain | Knees (3/5)

Knees are the overworked mom of the body- "I'll do it." "If no one else will, I guess I'll do it." "Ugh- I'll just do it!" Until- one day your laundry is abandoned in a pile in the middle of the room with a note that says- "Went out. Don't call." That's your knees picking up the slack for every other part of the body that's doing less than its part- until one day it won't, or even worse- can't.

+ WHAT IS KAIZEN YOGA?

An amalgam of different training, social and work and life experiences- we focus on specialized sequencing and a partner-supported practice as a means for living better and doing good.

+ What style is Kaizen Yoga?

Short answer: Vinyasa.

Long answer: Kaizen Yoga is an amalgam of different training, social, work and life experiences from founder, Mindy Sisco. This practice is structured around the template of Ashtanga Vinyasa. (All trainees are expected to learn the AV standing sequence.) It goes further by focusing on the following:

a full commitment to *trauma-informed teaching that provides a safe space for students where they are free from harassment and have agency/control over their bodies and experiences;

*specialized sequencing to maximize benefits and limit risks for all different practitioners;

*partner-supported practice to reinforce learning and create an environment rooted in support rather than competition;

*a teaching approach that is student focused/led and works to encourage students to advocate for themselves and articulate their needs.

+ What style will I tell studios I teach?

A: Vinyasa.

+ Is this an AcroYoga teacher training course?

A: No.

Kaizen AcroYoga is a tool not the goal in and of itself.

Kaizen Yoga takes the benefits of foundational AcroYoga poses and principles and brings them into a wider context. We use AcroYoga with the following objectives:

AcroYoga is a tool to investigate and understand human movement;

AcroYoga infuses great therapeutic benefits through therapeutic flying and the cultivation of a partner supported practice rather than solo practice side-by-side

AcroYoga helps students cultivate, maintain and advocate for agency of their body- a practice that starts on the mat and begins to extend beyond. AcroYoga is an active practice of articulating one’s needs. This is a practice that permeates all aspects of life.

AcroYoga helps cultivate the art of touch which is so critical for teachers with adjustments and for practitioners of other sports, movement arts.

+ How is Kaizen AcroYoga different from other AcroYoga programs?

AcroYoga is a gorgeous practice as dynamic as it is varied. Starting with what are considered the founders of AcroYoga: AcroYoga Montreal (Jessie & Eugene) and AcroYoga International (Jason Nemer), these two streams both approach the practice of AcroYoga differently with different objectives in their practice. In no way does Kaizen do what either of them do, just as J&E don’t do what Jason does and vice/versa.

My personal practice rooted in AcroYoga Montreal style has pushed my body and creativity beyond points I ever thought possible. Therein lay the distinction: I use the flows as a means to an end to drive my personal practice. My work as a teacher and teacher trainer diverts from the “tricks” or the “big moves” of the main streams of AcroYoga. There is an ever growing list of experts in their fields that will take you further down this path as a practitioner should you be so inspired.

AcroYoga with Kaizen Yoga differs in that AcroYoga is a tool as much a props, the wall, etc. rather than the practice in and of itself. We believe in the benefits of AcroYoga as they extend to regular yoga classes, other sports, educators in other arenas, social workers and being everyday citizen.

+ Why do I need to learn AcroYoga for teaching yoga?

A: In addition to the benefits listed above, from a physical perspective, AcroYoga is an active investigation, a physical problem solving.

Learning how to read body

AcroYoga gives feedback that wall, floor can't give. AcroYoga illuminates so much that goes unnoticed in traditional solo practice: For example, many students realize they have different length legs for the first time. Body imbalances and compensations are revealed by constantly needing to adapt the body to new situations and partners.

The “Whys and Hows” of yoga practice.

I’m guilty of it- we put our hand here in Triangle Pose because the teacher said so. We do Darth Vader breath because the teacher said so. Yoga- both as a student and teacher is a long process. More important that exact alignment or memorizing sequences is understanding “Why?” Why does my hand go here? How is the breath moving or supporting this pose? WHY DOES THIS HURT? Rather than merely going through the motions, AcroYoga gives us a unique opportunity to take complex movements and break them down into digestible parts. From there- how do we adjust, modify, move around, edit- to live better through yoga?

Simplify.

As part of his vetting/hiring process, Snowden (a computer genius) is asked: “How do you explain the internet to an eight year old?” The greatest command of knowledge is the ability to make it understood on the most fundamental level. Cuing AcroYoga tightens verbiage and directness of communication by breaking the message down into the simplest and most direct parts. Rather than a long winded explanation- how can we widdle the direction down to two basic actions: a push and a pull? This keeps the teacher in the student’s experience rather than trying to pull them into theirs.

+ Why do Yoga Alliance and being a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT) matter?

Yoga Alliance is the most widely recognized yoga organization in the world. Though not required by law to teach yoga, many places require staff to carry a certification under this banner. This ensures that the curriculum has gone through a vetting process and meets agreed upon standards.

+ For whom are you recommending this ttc?

This program is for those that want to be better educators. This applies to arenas beyond yoga. We envision this ttc as an investigation of both the teaching a learning process. Rather than giving you a set script to mimic we want you to take this knowledge along with all of your combined educational and life experiences and bring this teaching to life. We compare this to playing music- some schools want you to follow the sheet music. We want to give you the tools to write your own.

+ Is this only for people who want to become yoga teachers?

Absolutely not! We welcome all those interested in growing their practice and embarking on a new educational opportunity. We look forward to having you join us.

Saturday, July 22 | Ashtanga in Focus

jump back jump through

The bad news: practice doesn’t make perfect;

The good news!: perfect practice makes perfect.

Ashtanga is an amazing journey but I know sometimes I get a lil’ hungry for some hacks to move the process along! You’re in luck! There’s tons of amazing gems hidden in the postures throughout the sequence that are the key to unlocking the more challenging postures!

10am-12pm | Make Ya Wanna Jump!

Ask yourself- are you flying or are you flinging? I want to help you strengthen up your wings and fly through your vinyasas with beauty and grace! In this two hour master class, we’ll look at how to build step by step to jumping back and jumping through! (psss… we’re the only studio around with some very special secret tools (handmade props) to help you get there!)

12-1pm | break for lunch

Hips/Hands/Hearts in Focus

1-2pm | Hips

Do you need to get your leg behind your head? No. But do you want to? Sure! Why not!

We all know the cliche- “it’s the journey, not the destination.” This master class is the roadmap.

2-3pm | Hands

It’s not enough to ask you to balance on your hands, but this pose asks you to tip gently forward like molasses and *kiss* the floor with your chin AND THEN somehow change animals and before flying back and landing into one of the most demanding postures in the whole sequence! In this master class, we’re putting pause on “one breath, one movement” and giving ourselves permission to break the pieces apart, play with them 1-by-1 before putting it together in one dynamic symphony of movement.

3-4pm | Heart

it takes a lot to be open- literally and figuratively. “Having heart” in backbends and dropbacks are about trust- trust in yourself, trust in your supporter (teacher.) In this master class, we learn that trust isn’t blind. It’s built on awareness, intuition, and patience.

Sunday, July 23 | Acro Magic

We are better together!

10am-12pm | Montreal- where shapes are made!

Montreal style is based on reciprocity. This is the exchange of body weight, ideas, strength, struggles. In this workshop, we will focus on the concept of counterbalances and creative process making shapes unique to each partnership.

(No acro specific experience required, but must have some movement/sports experience. Must be able to hold your own body weight in a plank for 60 secs.)

12-1pm | break for lunch

1-2:30pm | Flying Therapeutics

You know what’s better than a massage? A flying massage. Here you will learn some basic techniques to help stretch out the spine and decompress the neck and shoulders using gravity for you rather than against you.

(No experience required. Must be comfortable touching and being touched by others as we will rotate partners to experience different body proportions.)

2:30-4pm | Washing Machine- let’s take a spin!

This is the acro that is so eye-catching on IG. “Washing machines” are a series of movements that run continuously. Some washing machines are brain, others are brawn, but they are always fun!

(No acro experience required- must be able to hold a 60 second plank.)

Mindy in HANOI | Inversion Breakdown

We all have them: goal poses. But how do we take the pose from instagram onto the mat in real life? especially with inversions. As my teacher says: "Practice doesn't make perfect; perfect practice makes perfect." This means, instead of flinging yourself against a wall hoping to stick a handstand eventually, there is a methodical approach that takes practitioners of every level and builds the posture starting where you are and breaks down the pieces needed to get you where you want to go.

If you are feeling stuck or ready to take on new challenges with inversions, this workshop is for you, no matter what level of practice you are at!

In this 2-hour training with Mindy, the student will:
1. Identify obstacles hindering progress
2. Learn how to break down the posture into approachable parts.
3. Learn how to add to/adjust one's regular practice to progress towards the goal pose
4. Build a practice that is injury-free
5. Understand the crossover benefits of these new movement patterns (ex: running, other sports, etc)

About coach Mindy from Korea:

Mindy has been practicing for 20 years and teaching for 10. She is co-owner of Kaizen Yoga in Busan, Korea where she specializes in working 1:1 with clients working through injury and chronic pain. Mindy in Ho Chi Minh | Mantra in Motion: Intro to Ashtanga

Mandala and Mindy Sisco warmly welcome you to this special offering -

Mantra in Motion | Intro to Ashtanga

In today’s warp-speed world, we are always on the move. The Ashtanga sequence is fixed- the postures and sequence don’t change. This makes it perfect to take with you anywhere in the world or even at home with an emphasis on self-practice built into the practice.

The series builds in difficulty towards the middle. In this workshop, you will:

1) set the proper foundation in the Sun Salutations and standing postures according to you current needs and movement patterns;

2) you will understand the thread of the preliminary postures that specifically prepare for two postures in focus: Monday- headstand; Tuesday- hip opening towards Janusirsasana C.

You will learn how to edit other postures in the series with props, etc, to extract the most benefit towards moving forward in the series.

Healing Yoga for Back Pain

Action is movement with intelligence. The world is filled with movement. What the world needs is more conscious movement, more action. -BKS Iyengar

How much do we know about how we hurt? Why? This workshop is where we give intelligence to action. We ask. We explore. We rebuild. There is no magic cure in addressing what hurts, but we are dedicating these few pressure hours to listening in to what our bodies and minds are trying to tell us.

This workshop is near and dear to my heart. It was yoga that broke me and yoga that put me back together after a decade of chronic, debilitating pain.. Our lives close us off- physically, mentally, emotionally. These two hours aren't magic- but I guarantee they are the beginning of a transformation. There will be a lot of practical tips for breaking the cycle of chronic pain and suffering. Whether it's your first step on your mat or it's like a second home, please join me to start inviting in and cultivating a little "good space (sukham)."

About Guest Teacher Mindy Sisco |

I suffered from chronic low back pain for more than 10 years and had the fortune of working with a teacher that gave such simple insight that helped me break through the pain.  Because of this training, I have been pain free for the past 5 years and continue to get stronger and more pliable with age rather than the other way around!

**(This workshop is highly recommended for those managing low back pain, hip pain. Please notify Mindy of physical conditions/limitations.)**

This workshop is for everyone. Back pain is an all too common chronic ailment. From sports to driving to sitting at work- our modern lifestyles are not kind to our spines. Whether you are a runner than needs a new path to balance your body or have been limited by the pain from enjoying activities- there is useful, accessible information for all. Yes, you can!

***This workshop does involve partner work- please be comfortable touching others and being touched.***

I feel very lucky to have found such a talented teacher, with such understanding of how the body works and sensitivity to injury. The work with you has been transformational for me. - Daun

(Mindy) is versatile in her teaching skills, wonderful at adjustments and has developed her own style and adaptations that make her stand out among teachers. - Joanne, Tribal Yoga Tulum

I was given my best adjustment in her class and her unique and creative way to help students align correctly ensure students can find correct alignment in self practice. - Amy

This was by far the best intensive I've ever attended. 10 hours of intense physical practice over the course of two days! How do we know Mindy is amazing? I'm not sore! I have no back pain after three hours of backbending. She teaches with so much integrity for the body. Thank you Mindy. - Sara, The Studio Cleveland

I’ve experienced much pain relief in my jaw, wrists, and low back.

My whole body is recovering. Now I can enjoy spending more time with my kids in my daily life that I couldn’t before because I would get tired easily. - Seonghee

The Back Story

How much do we know about how we hurt? Why? This class is where we give intelligence to action. We ask. We explore. We rebuild. There is no magic cure in addressing what hurts, but we are dedicating these few pressure hours to listening in to what our bodies and minds are trying to tell us.

This class is near and dear to my heart. It was yoga that broke me and yoga that put me back together after a decade of chronic, debilitating pain.. Our lives close us off- physically, mentally, emotionally. These sessions aren't magic- but I guarantee they are the beginning of a transformation. There will be a lot of practical tips for breaking the cycle of chronic pain and suffering. Whether it's your first step on your mat or it's like a second home, please join me to start inviting in and cultivating a little "good space (sukham)."

This is my favorite class to teach because it is so accessible and you get immediate benefit. It will be done live with real-time verbal adjustments and putting to use objects you have around the house as props.

AcroYoga Architects | Teacher Training Foundations Course

*****************(한글 내용은 맨 아래에)*****************

AcroYoga Architects | 50hour Foundations Teacher Training Course

How to Start AcroYoga?

Kaizen is the first and currently, only active AcroYoga School near you in Busan, Korea! Trained by AcroYoga originators, Jesse + Eugene of AcroYoga Montreal in its birthplace, Mindy knows it can seem overwhelming to begin. How to start AcroYoga? Right here, with us. We are built on the foundations of consent, communication and reciprocity.

AcroYoga foundations are much more brains over braun- learning the physics of the body in lieu of brute strength. (Work smart, not hard. . .for now!) When I first started with my partner, it took us 6 months of trial and error to figure out “Around the World.” Now that I understand the technique, I’m able to teach beginner students in a single class.

What Will I Learn in this Teacher Training?

Part 1: Ascend

Let’s fly! At the conclusion of part 1, you will be able to guide a class through the foundational poses. You will also have the building blocks of advancing your own personal acro practice with the introduction of washing machines (flows that begin and end in the same point), hand to hand/foot, counterbalances and handstand training.

Part 2: Descend

Part 2 we bring things down to earth. We will focus on Therapeutic Flying (think of it like aerial thai massage using gravity to open up the body.) Therapeutic Flying requires little/no skill from the flyer (receiver) and requires more stability and knowledge from the base (giver.) Thus, the base requires more experience and confidence even though the techniques are much more simple.

Is This Training for Beginners to AcroYoga?

This is an intensive schedule (25hrs in only 2 weekends- 6hrs/day.) You must be a “mover” but you don’t need to know about yoga/acroyoga- that’s our job! It is recommended to do part 1+2 together as they inform each other, but students may take ONLY part 1 OR 2 if schedules restrict full participation. You do not need to be a certified yoga teacher but is it advantageous. We are teaching you a specific skill set for you to be able to share in your community and help acro grow in Korea! Remember, at first the techniques are “brain over brawn” However, you should be confident to do 6hrs of physical training (with small breaks) two days in a row. *****ACROYOGA IS PARTNER WORK. YOU MUST BE COMFORTABLE TOUCHING AND BEING TOUCHED BY PEOPLE UNKNOWN TO YOU.*****

Mindy @ Toula!

It has been all too long.. but I’M BACK! I’m excited to be sharing two separate programs with you!

  1. Ashtanga 10 Day Challenge |

Monday, 3.21- Friday, 4.1 (no weekends)

    There are 2 class times available: 6-715am / 12-115pm

    * (students with time constraints may do a 60 minute class instead of 75. Please let me know and I can accommodate!)

How to register:

$135 for full 10 Day Series- please use venmo to @kaizenkorea . Otherwise, cash can be paid at the studio to Andrea.

Preregistration required. Once tuition is paid, please message Mindy with your name and email to confirm registration.

Ashtanga is a practice that uses the same fixed series of postures. I want this challenge to inspire you and meet you where you are- props are used and modifications are available for all needs and levels of experience. This series is absolutely beginner friendly. Come explore possibility with me.

2. Yoga for Back Pain

There are two programs running concurrently:

  1. Yoga for Back Pain (4) Class Special Series- $65

    M/W (3.21, 23, 28, 30) 730-9pm

This special series is based off my personal experience working through 10+ years of severe chronic back pain and an additional decade working with students to break through their own. This series was created for those with active pain working towards relief. Working with injuries is difficult, uncomfortable, but this series meets you exactly where you are with a lot of support in terms of slow transitions between positions, props to meet you where you are and a lot of 1:1 attention and explanation to get over the fear of not knowing what things are making the pain worse and how you can make it better.

  2. How to Teach This Series Continuing Education Units

    Above series (4x90 min class) + Workshop (4hrs) Saturday, April 2 | 11am-3pm

    (total 10 hours) $165

This CEU has you first practice the series to begin investigating your own experience with the movements and seeing how they’re metabolized in the body. The we go through the details of “what’s happening”: what the intention of the poses are, how to make them accessible to all students and what questions to be asking to get student not into a shape, but into the benefits of a specific posture. CEU includes participation in the series (workshop is not available separately as it only accounts for half of the hours.) This program includes a full manual with explanations and images.

How to register:

Please use venmo to @kaizenkorea . Otherwise, cash can be paid at the studio to Andrea.

Preregistration required. Once tuition is paid, please message Mindy with your name and email to confirm registration.
